Topic: Make a Scene! Mini-Dioramas with Cathy!
Join us for this workshop and learn how to create a three-dimensional scene to fit inside a small diorama, also called a shadowbox. You can use small magazine cutouts, paint, or draw the elements of your scene.
When gathering supplies to bring for your mini-diorama, you’ll want to plan a color scheme and a theme for it . This will help you create a cohesive 3-dimensional piece of art. See photos of examples on Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/mixed-media-collage-artists-guild/photos/34286402/
You also may want to add visual elements of fun, drama or surprise. A diorama tells a story, so you’ll want to think about how your selections either complement and/or contrast with each other, including:
● Paint for the diorama box,
● Elements for the diorama background, first layer, and second layer,
● Washi tape for the exterior of the diorama to “frame” your story.
Note - One pre-scored diorama box will be provided for each in-person attendee: 4 ¼” X 3 ⅛” X 1”.
Zoom attendees can order a diorama box in advance from https://alphastamps.net/. Order a minimum of 10 days ahead. Product: “Tiny Diorama Box”
Supplies:
● Acrylic paint
● Something to use as a paint palette
● Old jar or plastic container
● Small, flat paint brush, approximately ½”
● PVA glue ("bookbinders glue") or other liquid glue in a bottle
● Small brush for glue (old/cheap), approximately ½”
● Waste paper
● Scissors
● Bone folder or your favorite burnishing tool
● Ruler
● Pencil
● Something to score/mark heavily on card stock
● 1 piece of plain card stock measuring exactly 4 ¼” x 3 ⅛”
● Cardstock scraps: 4-6 small pieces, at least 4 ¼” long and 2” wide
● Washi tape: 15 mm (9/16”) width is a MUST; you’ll need 16” total
● Supplies to create your diorama background and elements.
○ If painting or drawing: colored pencils, markers, watercolors, etc.
○ If collaging: variety of magazine or other cutouts.
NOTE: your elements need to be small so that they can be seen in the diorama viewing window. The diorama box has a border, so the viewing window is: 3 3/16” X 2 1/16” (three and three-sixteenths inches by two and one-sixteenth inches).
Optional Supplies:
● Small, portable paper cutter
● Hair dryer
● Tweezers
